The Concept:
"Glazes in Red" is an entirely new series of abstract paintings from the studio of
Suzanne Moulton, (who is best known in Portland, OR for her "Puttytwist
Adventures"). This new series of works was inspired by tumbled agate found
along the banks of the Smith River in Northern California, random old car parts,
run-over street treasures, as well as the artists' intense fascination with the glaze
medium itself. The deep glossy reds punctuated with rustic textures are sure to
bring romance to any setting! Moulton even gives us a glimpse of her skill as a
neoclassical oil painter with a toure de force piece entitled "Beyond the Greater
Good" in which an medallion shaped portrait of a woman is juxtaposed against
field of candy red. This piece has been accepted into "Expression West" Juried
Exhibition held at the Coos Art Museum, in Coos Bay, Oregon. To view "Beyond
the Greater Good" go to www.coosart.org.
COOS ART MUSEUM - April 20th, 2005
200 artists submitted 569 works for Coos Art Museum's annual Expressions West painting
exhibition - a juried competition for contemporary painters of the 13 western United States.
Norman Lundin, contemporary painter and Professor of Art, Emeritus, University of Washington
spent 2 weeks conducting a 'blind jury' of the 569 entries to select the 95 works by 89 artists
into the exhibition.
Founded as a regional art competition for painters residing only in Oregon & Washington in
1997, Expressions West '98 grew to include painters in California. The reputation of the
competition grew so much that artists from outside the 3 western states asked to compete. In
2000 Expressions West expanded to include painters in the 8 western states. It was in 2003,
that Expressions West expanded to include painters from the 13 western United States. Each
year a new juror is selected by the Art Museum to conduct the jury process and the final
selection of winners - thus each year offers a new approach to the selection and the
competition. Submissions must be current works (created with in the past 24 months) and
must have not been submitted for any previous Expressions West competitions.
Founded by the Coos Artists League in 1950, Coos Art Museum is housed in Coos Bay's
historic 1936 Post Office building. With 5 galleries, Coos Art Museum mounts 30 exhibitions
annually. Coos Art Museum's 480 piece Permanent Collection rotates on display - but can also
be viewed online at CAM's website. Coos Art Museum is located at 235 Anderson Ave in
downtown Coos Bay or online at www.coosart.org. Open Tues - Fri, 10am - 4pm, Sat.
1pm-4pm. Closed Sunday, Monday and Holidays. Admission: $5, $2 for Students &
Seniors, Free to Members of CAM and participating Expressions West 2005 artists. Group
rates available upon request. Call: 541-267-3901, email: info@coosart.org
The rest of the paintings in the "Glazes in Red" Series vary from intimate 4" X 4"
panels to a room enhancing 33"h X 48"w. Each painting has fully finished edges
which do not require framing. So be sure to check-out the extra filigree, a
testament to Moulton's attention to craft and detail.
